Description

Rare English map of the Kingdom of Hungary, published by Thomas Terrey and Richard Palmer.

The map extends from Austria, the Black Sea and from the Adriatic and the Sea of Marmora to Kiev.

Includes an elaborate dedication cartouche to George, Prince of Denmark and Norway, with a large coat of arms and 12 smaller coats of arms. Prince George of Denmark and Norway, Duke of Cumberland (1653 - 1708), was the husband of Queen Anne, who reigned over Great Britain from 1702. The map would likely have been issued shortly after their marriage in 1683.

The map was later re-issued by Philip Lea, with the title credit revised. We note only a single example of this first edition, in the collection of the Boston Public Library.

The present example is trimmed at the top, with loss of decorative vignettes above and with loss of about 1/2 inch of map image at the bottom of the map.

Condition Description
Lacking the bottom 1/2 inch of the map and possibly a set of vignettes at the top of the map.
