Description

Important early topopgraphical map of Paraguay in 8 sheets, published in Vienna.

Francois (or Franz) Wisner de Morgenstern was a mapmaker, historian, colonel, architect and military engineer of Hungarian origin.

He was born in Budapest in 1804, and after serving under different governments in Europe , met Marshal Francisco Solano Lopez , who invited him to Paraguay to work with the major projects of the government of his father, Don Carlos Antonio Lopez .

Morgenstern was entrusted, among other things, with the task of writing a biography of Dr. Jose Gaspar Rodriguez de Francia. He did, and published the book El Dictador del Paraguay, José Gaspar Francia.

Morgenstern participated in several projects of the government of Lopez, as well as the Paraguayan War, providing expertise in military engineering in several battles of the war, as in Riachuelo, the largest naval battle in the history of South America and the Battle Curupayty , the biggest victory of the Paraguayan army in the war.

He died in Asuncion in 1878.
