Description

A Santa Clara Valley Rarity

Rare bird's-eye view centering on the Santa Clara Valley, showing Silicon Valley nearly 100 years prior to its ascendency as the technology capital of the world.

The view is rendered from San Francisco, with south shown at the top. The view extends from southern Marin County in the north all the way to Paso Robles Hot Springs in the south. The landscape, towns and railroads are shown.

At the time of acquisition, the source of this rare chromolithographic view was unknown. We have now identified it as the Grand Army Edition of the Daily Mercury. San Jose, California. Special Edition, June 1886.

At lower left is a Civil War camp scene by drawn by C H Harmun, who lived in San Jose in the 1880's. No examples can be located in OCLC/WorldCat.

Provenance: Warren Heckrotte Collection, PBA Galleries May 2016, from Yerba Buena Books, May 1989.
