Description

The First Geological Map of Georgia

Rare large format map of Georgia, originally published to accompany the Janes' Hand Book of the State of Georgia, published in 1876.

The map is accompanied by a copy of the Hand Book, signed by Janes, Georgia's first Secretary of Agriculture.

Fine map of Georgia, with sixteen different geological structures indicated by hand color in the upper 1/3 of the state.

The map holds importance as the first official geological map issued by the State of Georgia.

This scarce reconstruction-era publication sought to encourage repopulation and redevelopment of Georgia following the devastating effects of the Civil War with effusive descriptions of Georgia's many natural resources and cultural advantages.

Socolow, in The State Geological Surveys. A History states:

As far as is known, this is the first comprehensive attempt to publish the geology of Georgia

Little's geological map is not listed in Marcou.
