Description

Early Map of Sausalito, Advertising Land Sales only 3 Years after the Establishment of the First Post Office.

Detailed map of the southern part of Sausalito, oriented with west is at the top, identifying the lots to be sold at auction my Maurice Dore & Co. in July, 1873.

Uncommon land auction map for Sausalito, just north of the Golden Gate. The numbered lots for sale are between Main Street and Story Avenue, which was just north of North Street but is not on modern maps.

Sausalito (spelled Saucelito until 1887, when the name of the post office was changed) saw some early activity during the gold rush. However, from the time the stores and mill were torn down in old Sausalito in 1853 until 1868, there was not much of a town. In 1868, the Saucelito Land and Ferry Company was established to draw the attention to prospective settlers. The company purchased about one thousand two hundred acres lying on the south side of Richardson's Bay and divided it into town lots and country seats, laying out broad avenues and streets. The company at once established a ferry line between this place and San Francisco.

The first building erected in the new town was the "Saucelito" Hotel in 1869. This was soon followed by a two-story hotel near the Ferry Landing erected by James Greene. A man by the name of Ford built a store south of the Ferry Landing in 1870. The post-office was established in December 12, 1870.

Inkstamp "Remington Collection" in lower margin, with number 9357 stamped in lower blank portion of map.
