Description

Extremely rare Lafreri map of Asia, one of only a handful of copies in existence. Little is known about Mazza. He produced an exceptionally rare set of continental maps and was the engraver of a 10 sheet world map by Rosaccio in 1597. Because of the the rarity of the map, very little historical analysis has been done, other than an article by Richard Casten and Tom Suarez in the Map Collector (1998). Suarez notes that among other important firsts in the map of Asia, it was the first map to accurately depict the shape of the Island of Luzon in the Philippines. Striking cartouche, sea monsters, sailings ships and a compass rose. This example is quite fragile and has been backed on modern linen to support the weakness and fractures in to the paper. However, the map retains its visual appeal. No example of the map has appeared at auction or in a dealer catalogue in the past 30 years. An example of the America map was offered in 1985 by Richard Casten for $8700.00.
