Description

Rare early map of Minnesota, one of the earliest maps of Minnesota to be printed within the state.

The map is colored by county and shows Incorporated Cities, Township & Railroad Stations, Post Offices, Completed and proposed railroad lines and county boundaries. A ridge line in Northern Minnesosta notes "Dividing Ridge between the waters flowing into the Hudson's Bay and the Gulf of Mexico."

The Northwestern Lithographing Co. seems to have had a very brief history. We located only this map and a map of White Bear, Ramsey Co., Minn. also published in 1872. A photograph locating the offices of the company in the Prince's Block (Third & Jackson) are in the Minnesota Historical Society: http://collections.mnhs.org/visualresources/image.cfm?imageid=132261&Page=1&CFID=27224352&CFTOKEN=51988891&bhcp=1

The only example of the map which we could locate was the copy in the Minnesota Historical Society. Reed's career as a map maker seems to have been brief and he apparently joined G.J. Rice in the same year as the publication of this map.

The earliest maps of Minnesota printed in the state were printed circa 1855, but there was very little activity until the mid-1870s. G. J. Rice and Joseph Sewell seem to be the only active map makers priors in Minnesota prior to 1875. Alfred J. Hill also produced a map in 1857, but it was published by C.A. Sweet in Boston and published by Sewall & Tiddings.
