Nice Revoutionary War ear map, showing Chastellux's route through the Northern Colonies, from Cape May, Philadelphia and the Delaware River to Portsmouth, centered on Long Island and Newport , while serving under Rochambeau during the American Revolution.
The map exhibits his route from Wil Worth to Schenectady and to Portsmouth, Boston, Charles Town etc. and back. It names a number of small towns, court houses and churches on the route. Battle scenes are noted with crossed swords.
Chastellux work has been described as the first trust-worthy record of life in the United States (Howes) and one of the most notable acounts of the American Revolutionary period. Chastellux came to America in 1780, where he served with honour for three years as Major-General with the French troops under the Comte de Rochambeau. He developed friendships and acquaintances with many officers in the victorious revolutionary army, and during his tour, visited Washington, La Fayette and Jefferson.
