Description

Fascinating map of the region between Washington and Mount Vernon, prepared to promote the construction of a road to Mount Vernon. The verso of the map includes a list of subscribers and a lengthy explanation of the project.

James Tuthill was apparently engaged in the construction of a toll road from Alexandria to Accotink in the late 1850s. The map and broadside on the verso reflect is desire to raise additional funds to extend the road to Mount Vernon. On the frontice of the map is a highly detailed map of the region, incluidng many roads, toll roads, towns, mills, toll gates, forts and several places burnt on September 13. On the verso is an explanation of the project.

The map is apparently quite rare. We have found no references to the map or James Tuthill in any source. We estimate the date as circa 1860, because the lithographer, Herline & Hensel, as active in the late 1850s, but we suspect the burnt places reflect early skirmishes during the Civil War.
