This map was published in the first edition of Vander Aa' s Naauwkeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en landreysen na Oost en West-Indien, in Leiden 1706-08. Vander Aa was one of the great compiler's of early voyages of exploration. Often, the maps and views which accompany his works are the only obtainable examples of maps and views from these voyages, the originals existing only in manuscript or rare printed examples.
Pieter van der Aa (1659-1733) was a Dutch mapmaker and publisher who printed pirated editions of foreign bestsellers and illustrated books, but is best known for his voluminous output of maps and atlases. Van der Aa was born to a German stonecutter from Holstein. Interestingly, all three van der Aa sons came to be involved in the printing business. Hildebrand was a copper engraver and Boudewyn was a printer.
