This map covers part of central New Mexico, detailing economic features including geological formations, vegetation, and man-made structures. It was produced as part of the U.S. Geological Surveys West of the 100th meridian under the direction of Brigadier General A. A. Humphreys, Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army.

This map was created during the 1870s as part of the surveys led by George M. Wheeler, which aimed to map the western United States to facilitate settlement and economic development. The Wheeler Survey was one of the most comprehensive geographical surveys of the American West during this period.
