Description

Extremely rare pictorial map, celebrating the life of Theodore Roosevelt -- Rough Rider.

Published for The Theodore Roosevelt-Spanish War Veterans' Memorial Association of Buffalo, New York and compiled by Josephine Wilhelm Wickser, the map includes a host of vignettes of important people, places and events centered around Teddie Roosevelt's life and service durin the Spanish American War.

Centered on Buffalo's Spanish War Veteran Memorial, which is superimposed over an elaborate compass rose, the map tells a pictorial story of the war, employing maps of the Philippines, Cuba, Puerto Rico and a portion of the China, as it relates to the Boxer Rebellion.

The map would seem to have been produced by the same group which gave birth to the Romance maps of the 1930s, beginning with the Romance Map of the Niagara Frontier, drawn by Josephine Wilhelm Wickser in January 1931.  The present map was acquired in a collection which also includes a proof state of the Niagara Frontier map.  Wickser would go on to compile a number of other Romance Maps, some of which are now virtually unobtainable.
