Description

Vibrantly colored pictorial map of East Africa showing Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar designed by Hameed Moghul for East African Wildlife Society.

Centered on Lake Victoria and the Serengeti, the map is brightly illustrated with intricate vignettes of people, birds and safari animals including a giraffe, zebra, elephants and a crocodile.  Within the map are a number of Game Reserves, National Parks and Animal Sanctuaries.

Map key indicates that there are routes between tents, lodges, game reserves, national parks, and sanctuaries shown.

This evocative pictorial map of East Africa, created by Hameed Moghul in 1971, encapsulates the vibrancy and diversity of the region's wildlife and geography. Conceived during an era of burgeoning tourism and environmental awareness, the map serves as both an invitation and a guide, illustrating the rich tapestry of animals in their natural habitats across Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and the adjoining Indian Ocean coast.

The map's historical context is rooted in the post-colonial period of East Africa, a time when the countries depicted were forging new identities and looking towards tourism as a means of economic development.

EstaThe East African Wildlife Society  a membership-based non governmental conservation organization. It was founded in 1961 following the amalgamation of the Wildlife Societies of Kenya and Tanzania (themselves both founded in 1956).
