Vintage 1938 pictorial map of Manhattan featuring the hotels of the Allerton Club group.
The map's main function is to show people coming from out of town how to reach the hotels through various means.
The Allerton Group was founded in the 1920s and started out as a hotel on 57th and Lexington in Manhattan aimed exclusively at women and girls. James Stewart Cushman was a founder and former owner of the Allerton chain of reasonably priced club hotels for white-collar men and women which started in 1916. The group of financiers who joined Allerton included George W. Perkins and Arthur Curtiss James. The chain was named for Mary Allerton, a Mayflower ancestor of Cushman.
The Allerton eventually extended its chain to Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland. By the time this map was issued, they were offering hotels for men as well as women.
Rarity
The map is apparently quite scarce, this being the only one we can find.
