Description

Unrecorded early view of San Francisco, published in "Amsterdam by Judels."

A fascinating early view of San Francisco, looking south from approximately Telegraph Hill area.

Several Californios are shown in the foreground.  There are no wharves shown in the harbor and only a few early buildings.  The windmill is part of the artist's imagination.

Given the details illustrated and the look of the only other known Judels California view (see below), this would seem to be drawn from a very early sketch from the California gold regions, as it is just realistic enough not to have been purely from the artist's imagination.

Judels may be Nathan Judels, who seems to have been active publishing ephemeral material in Amsterdam by 1844.

Rarity

The present view is apparently completely unknown and unrecorded.

The Robert Honeyman Collection at the Bancroft Library includes Judel view of Gold Mining on the Sacramento River entitled Sacramento Riviere Waar Het Grooteset Bekende Stuck Goud Gevonden Is . . . acquired from legendary California bookseller John Howell, which is almost certainly from the same series.
