Description

Fine lithographic title page for the "Atlas Geográfico de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos," an authoritative cartographic work from 1897, dedicated to then-President Porfirio Díaz.

The title page is resplendent with the iconography of the Mexican nation; the central vignette features a portrait of President Díaz, framed by elaborate floral motifs and patriotic symbols, including the national coat of arms. This dedication underscores Díaz's influence over the national identity and territorial integrity of Mexico during a period characterized by modernization and centralization of power.

The atlas, consisting of 30 maps detailing the states, the Federal District, and territories including Baja California and Tepic, was a monumental publishing effort, reflecting Mexico's contemporary geographic knowledge and political divisions. Its publication coincided with the zenith of the Porfiriato, a term denoting Díaz's long tenure, marked by stability, economic growth, and significant infrastructure development, but also by social inequality and political repression.

The dedication also references Don Sebastián Camacho, a pivotal figure in the civic and urban development of late 19th-century Mexico.  Camcho served as the President of the Ayuntamiento, the municipal council of Mexico City in 1897.
