Description

The United States in 1784

The first edition of this scarce and under appreciated map of the 13 United States, shortly after America received its independence from Great Britain.

The map is remarkable for its detail. Pennsylvania, Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia extend to the Mississippi tentatively. Florida also extends to the Mississippi. The rivers and Indian Tribes of the Mississippi Basin are shown in detail. Many early forts are shown. The region west of the Mississippi is Mississippi or Louisiana.

A number of other early notes and places shown, including Walker's Establishment in 1750 (Kentucky). Massachusetts Bay is still listed as a province. Neither Maine nor Vermont has been created. An excellent early map of the 13 United States.

Homann Heirs Biography

Homann Heirs was a German publishing firm that enjoyed a major place in the European map market throughout the eighteenth century. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann, the business passed to his son, Christoph, upon Johann’s death in 1724. Christoph died in 1730, aged only 27, and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This altered the name of the company, which was known as Homann Erben, or Homann heirs. The firm continued in business until 1848.
