Description

Rare map of Duluth by W. Baird Patton, Civil Engineer and Chas. H. Drew, Draughtsman.

William Baird Patton was born in Philadelphia in 1860. Trained as a Civil Engineer, he worked in Pennsylvania and Virginia, before moving to Duluth in July, 1881, as the engineer in charge of a party surveying on the Duluth and Winnipeg Railroad. He remained with the Railroad until 1883, when he was appointed City Engineer. He was later elected St. Louis County Surveyor in 1895.

During his early years in Duluth, Patton published this decorative and highly detailed map of Duluth, which includes a marvelous layout of the city, including streets, block numbers, docks, rail lines, saw mills, lumber companies, parks, and a host of other minute and early details. One of the earliest obtainable map large format separately issued maps of Duluth. The only reference we could find to the map is the copy in the Minnesota State Library, and it is apparently exceedingly rare.
