Pre-Apollo Moon Chart

Fine poster of the Earth's Moon from 1969 featuring a trove of information on the moon, its cycles, named locations, and growing scientific knowledge on the celestial body.

The main feature of this poster is an elegant illustration of the near and far sides of the moon, complete with contemporary knowledge and names for the craters, valleys, mountains, and seas of the moon. These locations are all indexed and named with the most up-to-date information of the era.

Published five months before Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, this chart was likely made due to the amazing public demand for lunar-related information and material. The map includes scientific information on how the Moon influences tides, eclipses, and Earth's rotation which is both informative and entertaining. The idea this poster was created for the lunar fever that eclipsed the world in the 1960s is seen along the border which contains text regarding the moon or space, such as John Glenn, Yuri Gagarin, and Cape Kennedy.

An excellent piece of history produced to capitalize on the excitement of space travel and the moon landings which would be achieved later the same year.
