Early Depiction of Parts of the South Polar Regions
An exquisite map of the world from the 1892 Nouvel Atlas Illustre Geographie Universelle shows the world in two parts.
Continents are all hand colored with various shades. Rather detailed, contains many coastal locations and popular Pacific Islands like Madera and Hawaii (the Sandwich Islands).
The map includes depictions of the North and South Poles along with calling the water/area before the poles a "Glacial Ocean." The poles were some of the few unexplored/uncharted locations in the world. Europeans would send many expeditions throughout this period to try and reach the poles which explains the increased cartographic knowledge of the region around the poles.
The map has very roughly defined borders. While regions are labeled in bold, it can be unclear as to where the borders are. Perhaps this detail (or lack thereof) is because the map is trying to depict the entire world rather than individualized countries.
