Fascinating map of the United States, colored to delineate the states and territories.
In California, the map shows the mythical river flowing to an unnamed lake (Teguayo) to San Francisco Bay, crossing a region entitled "Parties encore inconnues" (Part Unknown).
In Oregon Territory, the region of the Snake Indians is the dominant feature. The source of the Missouri River is labeled, with evidence of the discoveries of Lewis & Clark, although the hint of the portage across the Rocky Mountains is still strong.
Texas is named, with the Champ d'Aisle colony shown, shortly before the efforts to colonize Texas began to appear on the map. Arksansas is shown in a double-wide configuration, below a curiously misconfigured Missouri. Illinois Territory is still pushed far to the west, requiring a curious land bridge to reach the Chicago area and Lake Michigan.
Florida, Michigan, Arkansas, and Missouri Territories all appear, along with the old Northwest Territory. Texas is named. Each of the Territories includes an annotation.
The map's cartography is largely based upon Humboldt, especially in Upper California and Texas.
The map is heavily annotated throughout, especially in the territories.
