Early 1960s: See San Francisco
An excellent example of a travel brochure from the early 1960s that promotes tourism in San Francisco. The brochure offers an array of activities and locations to visit across the city. Notable locations in San Francisco, such as Coit Tower and Chinatown are depicted. These are done in a more pictographic style, with the main streets and attractions of the city illustrated with cute designs that portray what these places offer.
Below the map of San Francisco and on the proceeding pages of the brochure are write-ups for various businesses and places of interest. The best restaurants in the city have a small paragraph dedicated to them and their location. The renowned museums and galleries of San Francisco are noted along with their daily admission prices and times.
A smaller map printed on the inverse side shows the larger Bay Area. Several notable locations are shown such as Stanford University and Muir Woods.
The style the maps are done in is an example of the transition between artistic aesthetics that would sweep the nation throughout the decade of the 1960s. A unique piece of Bay Area history that showcases a San Francisco few today still remember.
