Description

Dreamed Up and Drawn By Privates First Class Carlson & Nelson of Panorma

Fantastic and quite rare pictorial map and recreational guide, compiled by the Post Special Services Office at Fort Ord.

A whimsical look at the lighter side of military life. Many aspects of military training are depicted, from military units, training to weaponry. Shows public buildings, roads, recreational facilities and activities around Fort Ord Reservation and Monterey Bay.

The pictorial map is a first class production in the tradition of the best mid-century pictorial artists, offering a whimsical look at base life.  In the foreground is the Soldier's club on the water, along with PX No. 10 and a "No Swimming sign" with two soldiers looking across at topless mermaids., with a campsite in the distance being haphazardly assembled.

A marvelous caricature of baselife is shown, with significant interactions between the sexes, all manner of entertainment and recreation and other scenes.

At the center is the "Panorma", where it is possible that the artists, PFCs Carlson and Nelson, are engaged in a fist fight.

In addition to the excellent pictorial map, the pamphlet includes maps of:

  • Monterey Peninsula
  • City of Monterey
  • Pacific Grove
  • Carmel-By-The-Sea
  • Salinas Business District
  • Central Watsonville
  • Principle Streets of Santa Cruz
