Description

This 1944 color-lithographed map, created by Ernest Dudley Chase, vividly depicts Italy and Vatican City, capturing the essence of these locations in Chase's characteristic pictorial style. Published during the closing stages of World War II, this map stands out for its comprehensive representation of Italy, marked by vibrant yellow, with the surrounding seas in blue and other landmasses in green, offering a striking visual contrast.

The map features a rich tapestry of drawings highlighting Italy's historical sites, landmarks, cities, and towns, along with maritime elements like ships and boats, and imaginative additions such as sea monsters.

The map's design includes informative vignettes in the margins, a detailed compass rose, and insets of famous Italian landmarks, all framed by an ornate decorative cartouche.

The map was first published in 1935. It is one of Chase's rarer images.
