Air India Map of Singapore Shortly Before Self-Governance

Interesting promotional map of the City of Singapore, issued to promote Air India.

At this time, Singapore was experiencing significant transformation, both culturally and economically, laying the foundations for becoming a global metropolis. The map identifies notable monuments, institutions, banks, hotels, and other important landmarks, each providing a snapshot of Singapore's urban fabric at the time.  Some of the more fascinating locations include the Raffles Girls' School Convent, St. Andrew's Cathedral, Singapore Recreation Club, Singapore Cricket Club, Victoria Memorial Hall, Telok Ayer Market and Britannia Club.

Under British rule, Singapore was established as a significant port and naval base in the early 20th century. The city experienced growth as a commercial and financial hub. The Second World War had a significant impact on Singapore. Occupied by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945, the period was marked by hardship and turmoil.

Post-war reconstruction led to extensive development and modernization. Progress in education, healthcare, housing, and infrastructure paved the way for a bright future. However, political instability and the struggle for self-governance dominated the period. In 1959, Singapore gained self-governance, with the People's Action Party coming to power. This set the stage for full independence, which would occur in 1965, marking the birth of modern Singapore as a sovereign nation.
