Description

Scarce First World War poster calling for increased Irish enlistment to help the war effort in Europe.

The poster shows Ireland with "100,000 men still eligible" and states that "Ireland at the front looks to Ireland at home to answer the call." Superimposed on the map of Ireland are two insets, showing battles that Irish regiments have fought in around France, Belgium, Gallipoli, and Greece. None of the battles post-date early 1915, helpfully dating the map.

Ireland's involvement in the First World War is, of course, one of the most important periods in the nation's recent history. The early 20th century saw the growth and consolidation of Irish nationalist movements, which the war helped bring to a tipping point. While initial support for the war was strong in Ireland, as the fighting dragged on it became increasingly unpopular. The April 1916 Easter Uprising was by far the most consequential event of the war for Ireland. This first armed conflict of the Revolutionary Period was put down by the British Army, but it propelled the Irish Republican movement that led to independence in less than a decade.

The map was issued by the Department of Recruiting for Ireland and lithographed by Alax, Thoms & Co, Ltd, in Dublin.
