Description

This color lithograph, titled "Bellevue, Iowa," presents a beautifully illustrated view of Bellevue, a city situated along the Mississippi River. The image is taken from the first edition of "Das Illustrirte Mississippithal," a remarkable early color plate book of the Mississippi region, which Streeter called "the great early color plate book of the Mississippi region." The lithograph was created by H. Lewis and produced by the Lith. Inst. Arnz. & Co. Dusseldorf, capturing the essence of the city and its surroundings during the period.

The scene showcases the bustling riverfront of Bellevue, with a steam paddleboat navigating the Mississippi. Buildings, streets, and people are depicted, providing an insight into the daily life and activities in the city. The landscape is portrayed in vibrant colors, capturing the natural beauty of the river valley and the charm of the city.

In addition to Bellevue, the book featured other notable locations along the Mississippi, such as St. Louis, St. Paul, Dubuque, Vicksburg, Natchez, and Baton Rouge, as well as scenes of Native American life. This rare and visually stunning work offers a unique historical perspective on the Mississippi region and its development during the early 19th century.
