With 57 Engravings of Ancient Roman Buildings and Monuments by Marcucci

A rare edition of Giulio Mari's guidebook to Roman ruins, profusely illustrated with copperplate engravings of monuments by Giacomo Crulli de Marcucci. The present edition with the text in four languages (Latin, Italian, French and German) was issued shortly after the edition published in 1625. The book was published by Giacomo Mascardi, who was connected with the Accademia dei Lincei and noted particularly for his role in printing the works of Galileo.

This guidebook clearly targets an international audience, and even includes an engraving of a tour guide (cicerone) identified by name as Giovanni Alto.

The engravings, with are all dark rich impressions, depict a range of Roman ruins, including the Colosseum, and other famous monuments. Twin captions under each engraving, in Latin and German, with a full-page description in Italian on facing page.

While well represented within institutional confines, this book is rather scarce in the market. Only one example in RBH.

Condition Description
Small octavo (but 12mo. in size). Contemporary limp vellum. One-inch tear to vellum at fore-edge of back cover. Small worm hole to back cover. Tears with losses to pastedown endpaper (which is detached from inner cover). Small paper reinforcement to gutter area between pages 126-127 (printed area not affected). 6, 169 pages. Engraved architectonic title page (with reverse "N"s) and 57 copperplate engravings of Roman monuments and ruins. Signatures: +3, A-K8, L5. Complete. First gathering sprung from book block, but still holding by cords. Some old moderate dampstaining to portions of the book. Leaves age-toned. Overall a good copy.
