A Remarkable Composite Atlas of Broadside Battle Plans, Maps and Manuscript Plans
A fascinating and unique composite atlas of separately published maps and plans, this collection showcasing many of the pivotal military confrontations that occurred during the late-16th and early-17th centuries. Assembled in France, this unique atlas not only houses a treasure trove of exceptional maps but also offers an unparalleled glimpse into the application and dissemination of these individual maps during that era.
The contents of the atlas reveal a captivating blend of the remnants of an earlier Italian Lafreri-style atlas (evidenced by the plans of Bufalini, Florimi, Lafreri, and Bertelli), most likely compiled in the 1560s or '70s, which has been supplemented with an array of separate French and Dutch maps produced from the late 1590s until 1632. This amalgamation of cartographic works reflects the dynamic and evolving nature of map collecting during this period, as well as the ever-changing geopolitical landscape of Europe.
Featuring 39 maps and plates, many of which are broadsides with letterpress additions, the atlas presents an extraordinary journey through the military history of its time. While some of the maps exhibit considerable wear and losses, they remain valuable in understanding the complex nature of the conflicts that defined this epoch.
The atlas includes contributions from renowned mapmakers and engravers such as Melchior Tavernier, Nicolas de Mathoniere, Johannes Baptista Vrients, Claesz Janszoon Visscher, Leonardo Bufalini, Matteo Florimi, Antonio Lafreri, Jean Le Clerc, Bertelli, Lambert Cornelisz, and Cornelis Claesz. Each of these illustrious cartographers brings their distinct style and expertise, offering a visual narrative of the major military conflicts and the evolution of cartography during the late-16th and early-17th centuries.
Notable highlights of the atlas include a series of four plans of battles fought between the Habsberg and Turkish forces in Nagykanizsa and Székesfehérvár, the only other (incomplete) set of which can be traced to the Royal Collection in the United Kingdom. The set comprises 4 of 7 of these extremely rare separately published views of battles fought in Hungary in 1601, between pro-Habsburg forces, led by Philippe Emmanuel de Lorraine, Duke of Mercoeur, and the Ottomans, engraved by Thomas de Leu. These intricate plans provide a valuable insight into the strategies and maneuvers employed during this significant engagement, shedding light on the complexities of warfare during this era.
The atlas also contains two circa 1600 manuscript plans of a French monastery (or monasteries), and a manuscript plan of a Roman encampment. Additionally, the collection features a plan depicting the vicinity of the Battle of Lepanto, a crucial naval confrontation between the Holy League and the Ottoman Empire that shaped the course of history.
Other remarkable maps include several detailed portrayals of the fortifications and environ of La Rochelle, a significant French port that played a crucial role in the religious and political conflicts of the time, and a plan of the Siege of Montauban, which provides a strategic perspective on the unfolding of events during the infamous Huguenot rebellions.
As a window into the world of late-Renaissance and early-Baroque military cartography, this composite atlas embodies the spirit of exploration, curiosity, and strategic thinking that characterized this transformative period.
