Description

Rare Portugues Anti-Nazi Satirical Map of Europe

Entertaining and highly unusual pictorial map of Europe, published by Portuguese illustrator Carlos Ribeiro in Lisbon.

The map is also highly unusual in its use of caricature images, other than the Octopus a Nazi Germany.  Thematically, Germany is shown with two tentacle strangling Poland, while decapitating Czechoslovakia and Austria and menacing Holland and Belgium.  Curiously, Ireland is shown as a bulldog.  Switzerland is apparently a caged white dove of neutrality.

Italy is lampooned, looking incompetent and lazy, with Albania chained to Italy and Sardinia under Nazi control.

Portugal is shown as a snail, an apparent jab at its neutrality, which was in other circles being hailed as important.

America, a bull in Uncle Sam's clothing, is shown keeping an eye on the war from a distance.

The map was drawn by Carlos Ribiero and published by Livraria Barateira, Rua Nova da Trindade #70, 72, 76 and 78, in Lisbon.

Rarity

The map is extremely rare.

We locate a variant edition with a slighly different color scheme in the National Library of Portugal and a reference to the map in the Richard Wilson - Orson Welles Papers, at the University of Michigan.
