The image recreated the likely appearance of the Roman road outside the city, along with the surrounding roads and places attached to it. It shows a bustling scene, with people, horses, and carriages traveling along the road and through the city, along with temples, a triumphant arch, aqueduct, bridge across the Tiber River and the Mediterranean Sea in the distance.
One of the defining features of Rome during this period was its extensive network of roads. The city was built on the foundations of the ancient Roman Empire, and many of the roads that were built by the Romans were still in use in the 18th century. The style of the road and its engineered features are on display, with the monuments of Ancient Rome and its major edifices displayed on the horizon, beyond the fortified walls of the city.
