Description

Early map-illustrated handbill advertising a potential oil investment in a royalty held by H.J. McMullen in Armstrong County, in the Texas Panhandle.

There are twelve paragraphs of text, describing McMullen's conviction that the Panhandle is where the next wave of oil exploitation should take place, however the text has an strange quality in that McMullen's information is all secondhand:"I have talked to such oil men on their return from Amarillo..."; "I have kept our chief scout in that Amarillo territory..."; "Scouts who have checked the field told me..."; "I have listened--read scout reports--and seen for myself enough to convince me that the Panhandle is the bright spot in oil..." All of which lend an unsettling sense of uncertainty to the sales pitch being made.
