Description

Rare early map of the Israelites exodus from Egypt, published by Guillaume Postel in Paris.

Postel (1510-81) was a French astronomer and mapmaker. His map of the Holy Land appears to have been first published in 1553. There were a number of derivatives.

The year by year wandering for 42 years, led by Moses, is shown,  although curiously the parting of the Red Sea is omitted.  Towns are named and shown with small vignettes, as are important scenes from the Bible.

Provenance:  Leonard and Juliet Rothman Collection
