Description

Nostrand's Map of New York, produced by Ohman Map Co., and copyrighted by George J. Nostrand, is a comprehensive depiction of Manhattan. This map was created in the era when New York City was rapidly expanding and transforming, with a growing population and the construction of new infrastructure, such as subway lines and roads.

This map serves as a crucial tool for navigation and understanding the city's layout. It would have been particularly useful for residents, city planners, and visitors alike, offering vital information about the city's infrastructure, public transit, and road networks.

A key feature of the map is the detailed representation of Manhattan's public transit systems. It indicates the location of the Interborough Rapid Transit (I.R.T.) subways and elevated lines, as well as the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit (B.M.T.) subways. The map also highlights subway stations, bus lines, ferries, and Hudson Tubes (now known as the PATH trains, connecting Manhattan with New Jersey). It even marks the subway lines that were under construction at the time, giving a glimpse into the future development of the city's transport network.

In addition to the transportation network, the map provides detailed information about house numbers, allowing users to pinpoint specific locations within the city. This would have been especially beneficial in a city as large and complex as New York.

An inset map titled Rapid Transit Map of Greater New York offers a broader view of the transportation system extending beyond Manhattan. This would have been invaluable for people needing to travel across boroughs or for those living on the outskirts of the city.

By offering such a detailed snapshot of New York City's layout and transit systems, Nostrand's Map of New York serves not only as a navigational tool but also as a historical document, encapsulating the city's growth and infrastructure development during a critical period in its history.
