Description

First Edition of The Pilgrim's Progress With Its Sequel

First published in 1678, The Pilgrim's Progress achieved great success and went on to nine editions before the 1684 sequel. The sequel itself, in which Christian's family joins him in the Beyond, was then republished independently over many years in numerous editions. The present edition is the first to combine both parts in a single publication.

The early demand for the book was not from the learned, but from the pious and the young - PMM

It is above all in Bunyan that we find the slumbering Radicalism which was preserved through the eighteenth century and which breaks out again and again in the nineteenth - E.P. Thompson, The Making of the Working Class.

Condition Description
Octavo. Full black paneled morocco, rebacked to style, raised spine bands, gilt spine. Gilt tooling in board edges and turn-in. Edges sprinkled red. [iii], iv-xvi, 1-213, [214, blank],[xii], 1-196, [2, ads], (22 engraved plates). A-2D8, 2E4 (and 22 engraved plates). Corner tears to c8, L4, and M2, edge tear to R2. Occasional foxing and dampstaining. Hole in F1, touching a letter, and in N8, touching a few letters.
