Last year we shipped over 4,500 antique maps to more than 50 countries. Maps are shipped Monday through Friday year-round. If an order is received before 2 PM PST, we will ship the order that day. If an order is received after that time, we will ship the next day. We ship maps either flat in custom packages or in specially ordered thick tubes. Shipping rates are provided as part of the checkout process.

Description

Nice example of Henry Schenk Tanner's map of America from his American Atlas.

The map shows Russian America (green) in great detail, with very little known or shown in California and the West.

The Lewis River reflects details supplied by Lewis & Clark in the Pacific Northwest. A massive Missouri Territory reflects the political subdivision which subsumed the Louisiana Purchase after the creation of the state of Louisiana.

The Banda Oriental, with the Uruguayan cities of Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento, is shown as a Spanish possession shortly before its 1821 annexation as Cisplatina to the Kingdom of Brazil.

Tanner commenced production of his most ambitious project, his A New American Atlas, in 1818. Released in 5 folios between 1819 and 1823, the atlas is widely regarded as the single most beautiful large-scale American atlas ever published. The maps are large, detailed and elegantly engraved. The production resulted in the split of Tanner from his partners Kearney & Vallance but resulted in the greatest of American atlases.

Condition Description

Original hand-color. Some discoloration in centerfold. Minor repaired separation of centerfold at the bottom of the paper. Printer's creases and minor foxing in margins. A couple of small pencil marks illustrating the Gulf Stream.
