Quite a scarce view of Boston Harbor, in 1854, as seen from Fort Hill. The view was lithographed by J. H. Bufford based on a painting by J.W.A. Scott.
The view shows Broad Street in the foreground with a bustling traffic on both the street and in the harbor beyond. The wharves and related buildings pack the midground. The Arch Warf is shown, as is the hardware store of Geo[rge] H. Gray & [Isaac W.] Danforth at 235 Broad St., corner of Purchase St.
Copyright by Henry A. Page who is listed in the 1854 Boston Directory at 235 Broad St. The Boston Athenaeum example was donated to them by Page.
Given that page was apparently doing business (and perhaps living in) the building on the left, this image takes on the essence of a man trying to record the view out his own window for posterity.
Rarity
OCLC locates examples at the Boston Athenaeum, Mass Historical, American Antiquarian, and the Social Law Library. The Clements has a reprint that was done by Goodspeed's in 1978. We have seen an example online (sold in 2018) that is probably this reproduction.
