Description

Relief map of Central Europe, from Hamburg east to Siedlce and from Copenhagen south to Lodz, in German Braille and German. Country borders do not seem to be demarcated. Most of the place names are abbreviated in Braille; Berlin is "BL", but the Ostsee (or Baltic Sea) is spelled out entirely.

After the success of Marburg University ophthalmologist Alfred Bielschowsky's courses in 1915, The Marburger Blindenstudienanstalt (or Deutsche Blindenstudienanstalt) was founded in 1916 for the many returning soldiers who were left partially or completely blind from shrapnel or the large-scale use of chemical weapons in World War I.

Library stamps at lower right. Uneven toning. 'X'-shaped creasing over mountain in lower left, southwest of Halberstadt. Folding map bound by tape at vertical centerfold.
