Great whimsical map of San Diego, showing a host of activities throughout the county, with a larger city street map on the verso. The pictorial map of San Diego is remarkable and shows all of the hallmarks of what has now been termed the golden age of American pictorial maps.
This is a rare variant of Jones's Recreational Map, which normally extends further north to Oceanside. The design lanugage is more akin to Jones's slightly later map of Los Angeles. The infilling present in Coronado confirms that this is, in fact, a slightly later edition.
Two variants of the Recreational Map are known to exist, one of which contains additional detail of several activities which can be undertaken throughout the county. This edition contains substantially more information for the region it shows, with many more roads, atttractions and developments noted.
