Description

Nice original vintage map of Sarasota, Florida, and its surroundings. From the heyday of American pictorial mapping, this map was produced by the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce to advertise all the fun things to do in the city. The map was drawn by Thornton Utz.

The map is projected in a lively manner and shows the long history of the island, dating back to the Spanish era. The map makes much of the activities to do in Sarasota, with lots of golf courses, camps, museums, and more and depicted.

Sarasota was only incorporated in 1902 with a population of 53, but it rapidly grew. The railroad arrived that year, but the city would only really take off in the aftermath of World War I. It was heavily affected by the Florida land boom crash, and the failing fortunes of the Ringling family, but it would grow again following World War II.
