Description
Finely colored and scarce map of 19th-century Paris, focusing on the defenses of the often-besieged city.
The map centers on the old part of the city, which is still encircled by its city walls. Outside the city, the outlines of greater Paris are shown, with a ring of forts on both sides of the river. The map stretches about thirty kilometers out of Paris in all directions.
The maps shows forests, urban areas, roads, fields, and other features in the region that would have been of use to the military. The map was first published by the French military in 1839 and here reissued in 1857.
