Description

The Only Known Drawing of Henry VIII's Manor House (Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Library).

Fine 19th-century engraved edition of the 1717 James Hamilton map of Chelsea, showing the "village of palaces." The map preserves a beautiful look at 17th and 18th century Chelsea, at a time when it was mostly fields and manor houses.

The map shows various short-lived features of Chelsea, including the manor house at the top and the short-lived Chelsea College, now the Royal hospital. The size of each plot of land is given as an acreage. Roads and streets are named.

This map was originally published as part of A Historical and Topographical Description of Chelsea and its Environs, by Thomas Faulkner. The map was engraved by J. Barlow.
