Description

Ranchos and Early Petroleum Information

Detailed map of Santa Barbara County, published in San Francisco by Edward Denny.

The map includes a host of early information including the location of Ranchos, Towns, Railroads, Roads, Oil Pipe Lines, Water Pipe Lines, Oil Wells, Oil Tanks and Forests.

While we have not been able to definitively decode the hand written annotations in multiple colors on the map, it appears that the names are early neighborhoods, perhaps reflecting early developments, towns or other community regions.  For example:

  • La Roque (near Hope Ranch):  This neighborhood was developed in in 1917 by Stephen Rutherford and called Rutherford Park. n 1926, plans were approved for the San Roque Country Club and golf course to occupy much of the area adjacent to Rutherford Park, but development stalled due to the Great Depression.
  • Orella: Orella Adobes at Canada del Corral on the Gaviota Coast.
  • Buellton is named for Rufus T. Buell, an early settler who owned the Rancho San Carlos de Jonata Mexican land grant.
  • Stanley Park Summer Resort in Carpinteria
