Extremely rare map of Ceylon issued by Hendrick Doncker, which appeared only in the very last edition of his De Neiuwe Goote Vermeerderde Zee-Atlas ofter Water-Werelt, published in Amsterdam in 1705. The map is similar in appearance to Van Keulen's map and is on the same scale, but the sea battles are considerably more ornate in this edition and the interior details of the island much more primitive. The map is apparently very rare, as no copy of the map has appeared in a dealer catalogue or at auction in the past 25 years and no copies could be located on the internet. (Do 29). Trimmed into the image on at the top, left and right, with some minor waterstaining in the upper left corner and a small chip lacking. Still, a nice old color example of this very rare map.
Hendrik Doncker was a prominent bookseller in Amsterdam best known for his sea charts and nautical atlases. He issued his own original charts, which he updated frequently, and also worked with colleagues like Pieter Goos, for example to produce the pilot guide, De Zeespeigel. He died in 1699, after fifty years in business. His plates then passed to Johannes van Keulen.
