Description

One of the most interesting maps of Texas of the period. Includes insets of Austin, Matagorda, Galveston, Galveston Bay and Hyposomic and River charts of the state. The Austin inset is the earliest plan of Austin to appear in a commercial atlas. Colored by county and shoiwng the many railroads in use at the time. Includes towns, railroad stations, mountains, rivers, lakes, forts, Indian information, etc. A number of the Western Counties of Texas have not yet been formed. A marvelous map of Texas and Indian Territory.

O.W. Gray Biography

O. W. Gray was a publishing firm based in Philadelphia. Later, they published as O. W. Gray & Son. They published atlases in the late nineteenth century. Gray's National Atlas was one of the most successful commercial ventures of the 1870s and one of the last to employ hand coloring on maps.
