Description

Beautiful antique color-printed bird's-eye view of New York City and Long Island, issued by the Long Island Rail Road in 1902.

At the left, the view starts in Staten Island and northern New Jersey, extending over Manhattan, and the Outer Boroughs into suburban Long Island. The Hudson River stretches north off the horizon into the background. The smaller communities of Long Island can be made out as small agglomerations of buildings bunched along the rail road lines. The Hamptons and Montauk are at the right of the image, with a small profile of Block Island beyond. The Statue of Liberty can be seen in New York Harbor.

Altogether the view presents an almost bucolic vision of Long Island and the New York metropolitan area at the beginning of the 20th century. Much had changed in the city already, but so much more was in store for this area that would continue to grow as one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world, during the coming century.
