Rare engraved plan of Tokaj, in northern Hungary, prepared by Domenico Zenoi in Venice to commemorate the October 1566 siege of the city by the Turks and John Sigismund Zápolya.
The image shows the fortified town of Tokaj ("Tochai") surrounded by the rivers Bodrog ("Bodroc") and Tisza ("Tibisco"). Tokaj was a very important river crossing in the middle of the 16th century. The town is beset on all sides by the forces of the King of Hungary, Zápolya, in his attempt to take back the city from Habsburg forces that had conquered it in 1565.
