Description

Mapping Emilia at the Fall of Alfonso II d'Este

Rare map of a portion of the Emilia region of Italy, first published in Rome in 1597, dedicated to Francesco Sforza, the Cardinal Deacon of San Giorgio and papal legate in Romagna from 1591 to 1597, who accompanied the Pope on his visit to Ferrara in 1598.

The map shows the area around Ferrara, with cities (Ferrara, Bologna, Modena, Reggio, Mantua) drawn in bird's-eye perspective. Published at the end of the sixteenth century, the map was most likely produced at a time when Ferrara was being lost by the House of Este to the Papal State at the end of the reign of Alfonso II d'Este.

This is a highly unusual map, published by two rarely seen Lafreri School mapmakers.  Centered on Ferrara, the map extends to Bologna, Modena, Rezzo (Reggio), Mirandola and Mantua. The area of Emilia is depicted in a very misshapen way, placing greatest emphasis on Ferrara.

In the dedication to Cardinal San Giorgio, Dinovo states that he is the author of drawing and therefore a cartographer.  Almagia and Bifolco also credit Gherardi, who was an heir to the publishing house of Claudio Duchetti. The map included in the catalog of Gherardi's widow, Quintilia Lucidi, of October 1598 (no. 422 described as "the territory of Ferrara"). The plate was then acquired, in 1602, by Giovanni Orlandi who reprinted unaltered with the addition of its own editorial imprint. The plate was then sold and printed by Hendrick van Schoel (after 1614, but still dated 1602) and by Francesco de Paoli (1640).

States of the Map

  1. With only Dinovo's name (1597)
  2. With the imprint of Orlandi (1602)
  3. With the imprint of Henricus van Schoel (1615)
  4. With the imprint of Francisci De Paulis, formis Romae (1640)

Rarity

All states of the map are extremely rare.  We note a single example of the Orlandi edition at auction (Reiss, 2010) and no examples in dealer catalogs.
