Description

The First "Official" Map of Los Angeles.

Important early sketch map of Southern California, drawn on the spot by Edward Ord and included in Philip Tyson's Information in Relation to the geology and topography of California, one of the first important works on California and the Gold Regions.

Tyson's report has been called "the first extensive geological survey of the gold regions in California and one of the earliest to identify locations where gold had already been discovered".

Ord's map is a curious addition to a publication whose real subject matter was the discovery of gold in California. Nevertheless, it is of great significance as the first map done by Ord and also the first "official" mas of Los Angeles.

His 'vicinity' extends south to San Diego where the harbor is shown and noted to have "25 feet over the Bar". The Mission San Diego is also here. North as far as "Mission and plain of San Fernando". The Emigrants Road for the Gila is also on the map.

Though diminutive, Ord's is a foundational early mapping of Southern California.
