Description
Wonderful early woodcut map of the British Isles, published in Francois de Belleforest's La Cosmographie Universelle de tout le monde, in 1575.
The map renders the entirety of the British Isles and most major cities in De Belleforest's characteristically controlled and legible woodcut style.
The work continued the tradition of Sebastian Munster's Cosmographie, and borrowed substantially from Ortelius and Braun & Hogenberg for its maps. Unlike the works of Munster, Ortelius, and Braun & Hogenberg, there was only one De Belleforest edition in one language, and the maps are consequently much rarer.
